ميزات مادة الإيروجل الاستثنائية هي بشكل كبير نتيجة لهيكلية المادة. بالرغم من أن مادة الإيروجل تعتبر صلبة هي اسفنجية على مستوى لمقياس النانو، والمسامات الهيكلية الاسفنجية على صغر 20 نانو متر تقريبا. هذا الذي يجعل سيليكا الإيروجل خفيف جدا وشفاف ومادة ماصة أيضا (اعتبرت سابقا أخف صلب في العالم لكن حل محلها الآن مادة الجرافين ايروجيل).

حبة إيروجل بحجم مكعب ثلج لديها مساحة سطحية داخلية تقارب نصف ملعب كرة قدم. تستخدم مادة الأيروجيل في المتاحف لتنظيم مستوى الرطوبة. إضافةً تساعد في الحفاظ على الهواء داخل مقياس الزلازل المستخدم على كوكب المريخ - تمتص الرطوبة والغازات المتصاعدة الأخرى التي تخرج من المكوك الفضائي. مقترحات اخرى لاستخدامها تتضمن استعمالها كمبيد جسدي للحشرات لتجفيف الحشرة كبديل للمبيدات الكيميائية والسامة.
