AGI isn't just a toy robot dancing in pre-set patterns. Imagine it inventing its dance moves, composing its own songs, and then asking for your thoughts on its creativity. Mind-blowing, isn't it? A huge shoutout to Casey Armstrong for his informative blog post that inspired some of this content.

Now, let's hear from the experts. Elon Musk, back in 2016, anticipated we'd see AGI in 5 to 10 years. Fast forward to today, 2023, and we're right in the heart of that prediction. On the other hand, Dr. Alan D. Thompson has this fascinating countdown on lifearchitect.ai, forecasting AGI’s debut in June 2026. With such technological advancements, it makes one wonder if we're months away from AGI, rather than years.

Speaking of big names, Mark Zuckerberg envisions a brighter and more optimistic AGI future. He dreams of open source AI enhancing sectors like healthcare and education. David Shapiro, based on a Morgan Stanley report, sees AGI as a game-changer for tech giants, with possibilities of AGI being actualized within 18 months!

Demis Hassabis from DeepMind believes we're on the cusp of achieving AGI in just a few years. Sam Altman of OpenAI anticipates AGI within a 10 to 20-year frame. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, estimates 2-3 years, underscoring the rapid advancements in the field. And then there's the visionary Ray Kurzweil, predicting AI surpassing the Turing test by 2029.

So, where do I stand in this AGI timeline? I believe we might have already touched the fringes of AGI. Perhaps AGI, in its true essence, would be recognized only when it's embodied, mimicking human-like traits. GPT-4 can teach itself to become better through self reflection, learn tools with minimal demonstrations, it can act as a central brain and outsource tasks to other models (HuggingGPT) and it can behave as an autonomous agent that can pursue a multi-step goal without human intervention (Auto-GPT). It is not an overstatement that there are already Sparks of AGI.

When will we have AGI, or human-level AI? That's the question on everyone's minds, and in this video I gathered together predictions from various experts to try to come up with an answer.

The temptation as humans is to look at progress in the past when predicting progress in the future. But this assumes a linear technological progress, which is not the case. Technology advances exponentially. Creating predictions that take this exponential growth into account is very difficult, especially because each individual technology advances through an S-curve and eventually levels out, giving way to newer technologies.

Hence, a lot of predictions are going to be too high because they assume linear progress. The trick is to exclude the predictions that are too high while not jumping to the most optimistic predictions immediately. At the end of the video, I make my own prediction about the arrival of AGI.

In today's episode, we're charting the course of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) as of June 2023, guided by the timeline presented by AI expert Dr. Alan D. Thompson.

A critical turning point came in 2017, with the birth of the attention mechanism by Google researchers, paving the way for the creation of Transformers. These are the foundation of powerful AI models like GPT, and according to Dr. Thompson, we're about halfway to achieving AGI from here.

The period between 2017 and 2023 has been rich with major AI advancements, each one a stepping stone on our path to AGI. These include our deeper understanding of GPT-3's capabilities, innovative applications of AI in microchip design, and the emergence of multitasking models like DeepMind's Gato.

By 2020, we had made roughly 30% progress towards AGI, nudging up to 31% by 2021. Significant leaps, like the unveiling of GPT-3's remarkable abilities and the use of AI in hardware design, were clear indicators of this progress. In May 2022, the introduction of DeepMind's Gato model propelled us to 39% completion, thanks to its impressive capabilities and the demonstration of human-like general intelligence.

As 2022 came to a close, progress continued with developments in autonomous AI systems and AI-assisted human tasks. Into 2023, we saw AGI estimates rise to 41%, largely due to Microsoft's innovative use of ChatGPT in operating robotic components. The introduction of Google's PaLM-E 562B, capable of planning its own future based on visual and language data, took AGI estimates up to 42%.

The launch of the even more powerful GPT-4 model and the integration of AI into robotics have substantially fast-tracked our journey towards AGI. Jimmy Apples (who previously leaked a supposed AGI) was proven right again. OpenAI began work on Arrakis alongside GPT-4, its latest AI model, to create a system that could power AI applications like ChatGPT much more cheaply, the Information report said. The company ended up scrapping it earlier this year after it struggled to meet expectations around efficiency, the report added.
AI models that enable applications like ChatGPT are expensive and resource-intensive, requiring expensive compute power from cloud providers such as Microsoft, Amazon, and Google. Estimates have suggested that ChatGPT costs more than $700,000 per day to run.
OpenAI struck a partnership with Microsoft in January, giving it access to the tech giant's Azure platform. The Information reported that "some executives at Microsoft" were left disappointed by the shortcomings of Arrakis.
