CHROMA GALAXIES is the total of my expertise in designing landscapes and otherworldly sceneries with paint. Following the script of creativeblack from Giantstep, I shot a total of almost 35 Terabytes in 8K Raw Video over a period of 8 months, including the complete set of inks and fluids, macro lenses, lights and motion control. All scenes were created on paper.

The moment I heard the opening thump of bass...I knew I would be using this song for my film. But then those haunting vocals hit my ears...and blew my mind. It was like a punch deep in my soul. It's hard to explain that feeling when you first hear a song and you immediately fall in love with it. Almost like you've known it all along.

I hadn't even planned to start working on this film yet, but I was so inspired that I furiously began to lay down time-lapse clips. I couldn't stop pouring over it. It was last September and I was supposed to be working on Monsoon IV, but I forgot all about it once I heard Ex Makina's "Breathe." It almost felt like it was made for a black and white storm film.

About halfway through editing, I knew the song title would be my film title as well. It was so perfect I couldn't believe it. Sometimes for me...when I'm chasing or watching an amazing storm...I'll realize I haven't taken a breath in awhile. Never really thought of it until I heard this song.

I love being inspired by other artists. I love soundtracks. I can't imagine the movie Interstellar without that powerful pipe organ soundtrack by Hans Zimmer. Music is so important to what I do and I'm so incredibly thankful to husband/wife duo Iain and Rebecca Campbell for writing this amazing song. Thanks to the MusicBed as well for having such fantastic musicians and artists.

In early 2017, I put together a film called Pulse that was my first ever black and white time-lapse movie. It was so different and fun, I wanted to do a follow-up this year before the next chase season begins. Breathe is made up solely of storm clips from 2017...either from the spring across the central plains or from the monsoon here in the southwest. Some are favorites, some are just ones I knew would be amazing in monochrome and others I used because they fit the music so well.  I also went with a wider aspect ratio on these films to give it more of a cinematic feel.

This is also the first film I've ever done in full 8K resolution. I'm super excited about that. You may not be able to watch it in that resolution, but it's there if you can. Otherwise, 4K is a must if you can!

I truly hope you enjoy this. For me, I needed something to pass the time and bridge the next few months as I wait for supercells to return to the plains. But honestly, I truly love putting these together. Thanks for all your support in the past and feel free to share!

Technical Details:

I used two Canon 5DSR's along with a Canon 11-24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 135mm and Sigma Art 50mm. Manfrotto tripods. The final product was edited in Lightroom with LR Timelapse, After Effects and Premiere Pro.

We were invited to Bulgaria by "Our Home is Bulgaria" to explore the country for the first time this year and it was an amazing experience to travel through this space with so much history and diverse landscapes. Some of the places we feature here are the Seven Rila Lakes, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak, Belogradchik Fortress, Devetashka cave, and Mount Buzludzha.

Nothing happens unless first a dream - Carl Sandburg

If you would ask me, what influenced me most, when I was a teenager, I would mention this quote of Carl Sandburg. It was printed on a poster of Uluṟu, which was called Ayers Rock in the 1990s outside of Australia. For over ten years that poster was hanging around and I had seen it every day. It is not surprising that the wish to travel to Down Under became stronger each year. Finally in 2010 I did my first trip to Australia, a further trip followed.

And I returned again in 2015 - this time I wanted to bring back something for everybody staying at home - Australia’s Nature. Incredible coast lines like the Twelve Apostel, Byron Bay, Cape Conran (Thanks Helmut :), Queensland coast from Daintree to Gold Coast and the outback with simply nothing for thousands of kilometers and than suddenly the Uluṟu or the Devil Marbles.

Many trips starting and ending in the big cities of Australia - but you haven’t been to Australia, if you just stay there. It is not all about Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne …. you have to go out and experience that continent on your own. The film starts and ends in the cities, but between you will see what you could see in three weeks of that amazing land. We couldn’t be everywhere, but one day we will return and perhaps we will bring you another piece of nature from Down Under.

The outcome of the last trip is a 8k time-lapse in true HDR. Not that tone-mapping thing - it is real HDR for the highest resolution displays available today.

Enjoy our second preview of a series of ultra high definition clips in more than 4k HDR. Your TV set has to support 4k HDR and the Youtube App on it must support HDR-delivery. At the moment one of the best ways is Googles Chromecast Ultra or a Samsung Display with Youtube HDR App.

This 8k timelapse was produced with cameras with 50 Megapixels and enough dynamic range to produce REAL High Dynamic Range - HDR - footage.

I started the clip very early to give context about the grim state of the battlefield and the arrival of the Rohirrim as all hope seemed lost. Montage and edit from the December 1, 2020 release in 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray with Dolby Atmos 5.1 audio. The coloring has been totally remastered by film director Peter Jackson to get a consistent look throughout all of the movies.

Director Peter Jackson's quote about the re-release: "The thing with 4K is not just to go for pristine sharpness, it is to preserve the cinematic look of it at the same time as everything becoming crisp."

The quality of this release is incredible. The visuals are gorgeous and it is worth it to watch all extended editions of the movies over again!

I rented a Red Monstro 8K cinema camera for a recent short film. I used Arri Master Anamorphics for a 2.40:1 finish, so my settings were 8K 6:5, 4:1 compression at about T8 mostly.

I also tested the Sony Venice for this project, since both of them are good cameras for low light. Overall, till ISO 3200, they are pretty much similar. At ISO 6400 the Sony Venice is definitely better, and it has great IRND filters that retain color information all the way up. Still, I picked the Monstro for reasons explained in the video.
